“Dia seperti isteri Anwar Ibrahim. Dia memakai sarung tangan ketika bersalam.

MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek must apologise for his condescending remarks against Islam, said president of the Muslim lawyers association Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar.

subashini mohd shafi court case pc 030407 zainul rijal“The MCA president has been trying to portray adherents to Islam as anti-social and unable to serve the community,” said Zainul Rijal in a statement today.

The syariah lawyer said this after Chua’s remarks against PAS’ candidate for the Tenang by-election Normala Sudirman were echoed by several fellow MCA leaders, who zeroed in on her disinclination against shaking the hands of men as she makes her campaign rounds.

Chua had on Thursday warned the Chinese community against “this kind of Islamic values”.

This was followed by Deputy Trade Cooperative and Consumer Affairs Minister Tan Lian Hoe (below, shaking hands) who this morning condemned Normala over the same matter.

“This is the most basic thing… Not only men, but when she shakes hands with women, she also needs to wear glove. This is not friendly. It’s as if she thinks our hands are dirty,” said the Gerakan Wanita leader.

“I hope the Chinese voters are careful. We are very worried about the Islamic state. They want to implement an extremist Islamic state,” she added.

“The issue of shaking hands between non-mahram (family member) men and women should not be made a political issue by any quarters.

“It is a religious injunction that men and women who are non-mahram cannot touch each other, and this is not a new thing. I myself will not extend my hand out to a woman who is not mymahram,” said Zainul.

“Not shaking hands with persons of the opposite gender is not a disability. On the contrary, it reflects the strength of principles held by that person,” he said.

“For Muslims, it is a matter of common knowledge that men and women who are not mahram should not touch each other. It is only those who pick and choose from Islam that do not put it into practice,” Zainul Rijal said further.

At a press conference earlier today, Normala (above) said the remarks of BN leaders about the issue reflect their failure to understand Muslim manners.

– Agensi

PETALING JAYA: Crooks are cashing in on personal details readily revealed by some Facebook users and using them in identity frauds, blackmail or to “steal” money from users.

Over-excited online social network users who reveal personal information and accept “friendship” requests from complete strangers have made the site an increasingly popular target for cybercriminals.

Many users, especially beginners, experience culture shock when they suddenly become “popular” and receive many friendship requests, said criminologist and Malaysian Association of Certified Fraud Examiners president Datuk Akhbar Satar.

“They feel encouraged to reveal more information about themselves without realising the damage it could cause,” he said, adding that many users even posted sexy or nude pictures of themselves on the website and ended up being blackmailed by complete strangers.

Akhbar said the practice of posting personal details such as birth dates, addresses and telephone numbers on the website had proven to be the source of a lucrative business for identity fraudsters.

“The crime triangle comprises elements of desire, target and opportunity. Once there is a desire to commit the crime, the criminal identifies the target and opportunity. This is where Facebook comes in,” he said.

According to Socialbakers.com, a website dedicated to global Facebook statistics, there are currently 9,874,860 Facebook users in Malaysia alone, which is 37.75% of the entire population.

Youths between the ages of 18 and 25 formed the majority of Malaysian users – 38% – while the youngest group, aged between 13 and 15, makes up 7% of users.

The gender ratio of Malaysians on Facebook is almost equal – with 53% of them being female.

Hackers operating on social networks can easily create fake profiles and send friendship requests to unsuspecting users within their target groups.

Many users have become victims of identity frauds, harassment, blackmail and have lost money through various scams operated via the website.

There have also been reports of gangs and drug syndicates in Malaysia recruiting members through Facebook and other social networks.

The criminals’ job is made easier as the name and profile picture of the user is visible to all via the websites’ default privacy settings.

“Unlike crimes committed in the physical world, cyber crimes require little or no investment,” said Akhbar, adding that such crimes were also difficult to detect.

Apakah GIANT menipu tarikh luput barang jualan mereka?

Sebab tu orang Teganu cerdik-cerdik …

… laporan dipetik dari NST hari ini:

Maybe it’s in the fish, e-books, and effort

KUALA TERENGGANU: Whenever public examination results are announced, all eyes will be on Terengganu.

It has made a name for itself and broke numerous records for producing the best results in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR), Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examinations.

Last year, for instance, was the tenth consecutive year that Terengganu came out with the best UPSR results with 15.4 per cent of its 23,143 pupils obtaining straight As.

To top that feat, it was also an improvement over the 2009 results, which 15.3 percent of pupils scored straight As.

What’s the secret of their success?

Is it the students’ diet? Or their proximity to the sea? Would students in other states be able to produce similar results if they were put on a diet of keropok lekor and other fish-based dishes for which Terengganu is famous for?

State Education, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Human Resource Committee chairman Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman felt it’s not just the ikan tongkol that did it.

“Although the protein and fatty acids in fish contribute to physical growth and brain development, we cannot say that it is the main reason for the students prowess.”

He said the consistent excellent results was because of the state government’s focus on education with a huge yearly capital injection into the sector.

State Education Department director Razali Daud said the efforts of teachers, parents and students must also be taken into account. The parent-teacher associations in the state took an active role in ensuring the students did well.

A father and teacher, Rossdee Ali, 39, said night and weekend tuition classes by teachers were the norm.

“The teachers here sacrifice their evenings and weekends to see their students succeed.”

Having been a teacher outside Terengganu, Rossdee said he immediately noticed the difference in teachers’ attitude when he was transferred here 10 years ago.

“The teachers never ask for tuition fees. However, the PTAs would contribute to a special fund for the teachers to give extra tuition,” said Rossdee, who teaches Form Five students at SM Kompleks Gong Badak.

Some parents said the lack of distractions were also a factor.

Housewife Nor Azlina Ahmad, 40, said the absence of shopping malls and entertainment outlets made it easier for children to study.

“They spend most of their time in the state library or take a stroll by the beach.”

Her son, Muhammad Arif Muhammad Nandi, 15, scored 9As in the PMR examination last year and her eldest son, Muhammad Afif Fathullah, is now studying architecture in the United Kingdom after scoring 12As in the SPM examination in 2009.

For those in rural areas, the students’ dogged determination to free their family from the shackles of poverty drive them to excel.

Nik Haqimi Muaz Nik Mat, 15, one of the best students of SMK Pelong in Setiu, is one of them.

The tenth of 12 children said he wanted to lighten the burden of his rubber tapper father, Nik Mat Mohd Noor, 55.

Life was difficult for another straight-A student at the school, Errissa Nadira Rusli, who lost her father five years ago to an illness. The second of six children said it was her mother, Maziah Salmuna, 43, who kept her focused on her studies.

It was a proud moment for the rural school, too, as their PMR candidates achieved a 100 per cent pass rate and made it into the top 20 schools in the state.

Principal Adam Che Muda said it was a historic moment to have all its 89 candidates passing the exam, including 10 students scoring all As.

Razali said the state Education Department had a plan dubbed “201052”, which stands for 20, 10, 5 and 2, the targeted percentage of students scoring straight As in next year’s UPSR, PMR, SPM and STPM respectively.

Ahmad Razif said the students who excelled in UPSR would be given a chance to study in the many premier, elite and Imtiaz schools, which are just different names given to “super schools” with upgraded educational infrastructures.

“We will build more of these super schools to cater for the growing number of excellent students and allow them to repeat their excellence during PMR and SPM examinations.”

The adoption of cutting-edge education technology in classrooms in the form of e-books had also played a part to further nurture the culture of educational excellence.

To date, 50,000 e-books had been distributed to students to replace textbooks and revolutionise the way lessons are taught. The e-book also gives students a hands-on experience with information technology.

However, at RM1,000 apiece, the e-book approach would be a very tough act for other states to follow.

The versatility of e-books is such that students are not only freed from the hassle of lugging heavy textbooks to school, but they can also recite the Quran with the integrated Quranic verses programme installed.

Well, maybe I should rephrase … I felt almost cheated at Carrefour today.

I had been wanting to buy a power drill to replace my old one that was stolen several years ago. I had been scouting and comparing the various makes and models with a huge different in the price range.

Since my old one was Black and Decker, I decided to stick to the brand finally. Each time we do our grocery, I would always spent some time at the hardware or DIY area – like most man would do. When I went to Carrefour Wangsa Maju this evening, I did my usual ritual looking at the tools and stuffs at the hardware/auto/DIY area.

The shelf tag of B&D power drill that I had been targeting for is on promotion – tagged at RM199.00. Since there were only two sets left, I quickly took one and put in my trolley.

After checking out and made my payment I drove back home and only later do I checked that the receipt does not tally with the promotion price on the shelf tag. I paid for RM239.00. Thus, I have no choice but to drive again 8 km back to Carrefour.

I showed my receipt and complained the difference with what I saw at the shelf tag. The customer service staff asked their “roller” to verify my claim and said that they were right. Confident that I was right, I walked to the roller and showed him the price on the shelf was actually RM199.00 and not RM239.00.

To make the story short, after some argument, they had to acknowledge their mistake and readily refunded me the difference.

Though I get back the difference, I felt cheated because I have to spend effort, time and petrol to go back unnecessarily to Carrefour again just to get RM40 – and that it was Carrefour who “cheated” me with “false” price tag in the first place. They should consider all those rather being negligence and just simply apologise.

I was at the Customer Service for almost 25 minutes not including the time spent to drive back and forth along the busy MRR2. The total effort, time and material is even more that the difference refunded. After all it was my right in the first place to get the price shown on the tag.

Though all the staffs that handled my complain were nice to me and even gave me some token from the free gifts items behind the counter after I insisted my dissatisfaction despite being refunded, I pity the many other customers that walked out of Carrefour (and the same happened to me before at their other major competitor’s store before), paid the more than what they saw at the price tag and never bother to double check the mistakes made by these giant stores.

Are the consumers always at the disadvantage end?

Ingatkan saya …
