DONGYANG (China), March 30 — It’s the end of a school day in the eastern Chinese city of Dongyang, and eager parents collect their children after a hectic day of primary school.

But that’s just the start of busy times for dozens of egg vendors across the city, deep in coastal Zhejiang province, who ready themselves to cook up a unique springtime snack favoured by local residents.

Basins and buckets of boys’ urine are collected from primary school toilets. It is the key ingredient in “virgin boy eggs”, a local tradition of soaking and cooking eggs in the urine of young boys, preferably below the age of 10.

There is no good explanation for why it has to be boys’ urine, just that it has been so for centuries.

The scent of these eggs being cooked in pots of urine is unmistakable as people pass the many street vendors in Dongyang who sell it, claiming it has remarkable health properties.

“If you eat this, you will not get heat stroke. These eggs cooked in urine are fragrant,” said Ge Yaohua, 51, who owns one of the more popular “virgin boy eggs” stalls.

“They are good for your health. Our family has them for every meal. In Dongyang, every family likes eating them.”

It takes nearly an entire day to make these unique eggs, starting off by soaking and then boiling raw eggs in a pot of urine. After that, the shells of the hard-boiled eggs are cracked and they continue to simmer in urine for hours.

Vendors have to keep pouring urine into the pot and controlling the fire to keep the eggs from being overheated and overcooked.

Ge said he has been making the snack, popular due to its fresh and salty taste, for more than 20 years. Each egg goes for 1.50 yuan (RM0.73), a little more than twice the price of the regular eggs he also sells.

Many Dongyang residents, young and old, said they believed in the tradition passed on by their ancestors that the eggs decrease body heat, promote better blood circulation and just generally reinvigorate the body.

“By eating these eggs, we will not have any pain in our waists, legs and joints. Also, you will have more energy when you work,” said Li Yangzhen, 59, who bought 20 eggs from Ge.

The eggs are not bought only at street stalls. Local residents are also known to personally collect boys’ urine from nearby schools to cook the delicacy in their homes.

The popularity of the treat has led the local government to list the “virgin boy eggs” as an intangible cultural heritage.

But not everyone is a fan. Chinese medical experts gave mixed reviews about the health benefits of the practice, with some warning about sanitary issues surrounding the use of urine to cook the eggs.

Some Dongyang residents also said they hated the eggs.

“We have this tradition in Dongyang that these eggs are good for our health and that it would help prevent things like getting a cold,” said Wang Junxing, 38. “I don’t believe in all this, so I do not eat them.” — Reuters

PEMBELA says ‘Christian threat’ seminar a ‘guaranteed’ Muslim right

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 — Non-Muslims should not question a planned seminar on “the threat of Christianisation” to Islam as the Federal Constitution empowered Muslims to organise such events, a conservative pressure group asserted today.

The Muslim Organisations in Defence of Islam (PEMBELA) defended the event jointly organised by the Johor state education and mufti departments, saying that opposition towards the event meant questioning guaranteed Muslim rights.

“There is a trend to question the efforts to strengthen the faith of Muslims, and this is ignorance towards the special rights of Muslims enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

“Efforts like this seminar are guaranteed rights under Article 11(4) of the constitution… the powers under this [Article] puts Islam at its proper place, as the religion of this country,” PEMBELA secretary-general Abdul Karim Omar told reporters.

“This is a position that cannot be questioned by anyone,” he said.

Article 11(4) of the Federal Constitution simply states that “state law and… federal law may control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam.”

Abdul Karim stressed that as the seminar was only meant for Muslim teachers and did not involve non-Muslims, “there was no need to get upset” over the matter.

“[Participation at] the seminar is by special invitation… it focuses on intra-religious matters of Muslims, it’s about challenges faced by Muslims,” he said.

Abdul Karim said there was no need for the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) to get involved in the matter, reiterating that the seminar was “exclusively” for Muslims.

“PEMBELA wants the irresponsible remarks made by several parties withdrawn immediately, and for the Johor state education department and the mufti state department to receive due respect for their noble efforts in upholding the faith of Muslims,” added Abdul Karim.

The seminar themed “Pemantapan Aqidah, Bahaya Liberalisme dan Pluralism Serta Ancaman Kristianisasi Terhadap Umat Islam. Apa Peranan Guru?” (Strengthening the Faith, the Dangers of Liberalism and Pluralism and the Threat of Christianity towards Muslims. What is the Role of Teachers?), requires the attendance of two religious teachers from each of the 55 national schools across Johor.

The Johor Mufti and Education departments have come under fire for endorsing the unproven claim that Christians are threatening the Islamic faith.

De facto Islamic affairs minister Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom has defended the controversial seminar, saying that it was needed to safeguard the interests of Muslims.

The Johor Mufti Department has said its seminar on Saturday is to ensure young Muslims are not influenced by “the threat of Christianisation.”

The officer in charge of the seminar told The Malaysian Insider yesterday the department was jointly organising the event with the state education authorities because they “fear young Muslims will be confused and not understand” when faced with attempts to convert them.

“Even if there is no threat, we must be careful so that the faith of Muslims will not be influenced,” the official, who declined to be named, said when asked if he had proof of proselytising by Christians.

MEMPERTAHANKAN HAK PENGANJURAN SEMINAR Jabatan Pelajaran Johor dengan kerjasama Jabatan Mufti Johor bertajuk ‘Pemantapan Aqidah, Bahaya Liberalisme dan Pluralisme Serta Ancaman Kristianisasi Terhadap Umat Islam. Apa Peranan Guru? ‘

Pertubuhan Muafakat Sejahtera Masyarakat Malaysia (MUAFAKAT) menolak kenyataan pihak-pihak tidak bertanggungjawab serta berkepentingan sempit politik kepartaian yang mempersoalkan hak penganjuran seminar Jabatan Pelajaran Johor dengan kerjasama Jabatan Mufti Johor bertajuk ‘Pemantapan Aqidah, Bahaya Liberalisme dan pluralism serta Ancaman Kristianisasi terhadap Umat Islam’.

Tindakan melabelkan program kelimuwan sebegini sebagai “usaha jijik politik untuk menggunakan agama bagi menakut-nakutkan rakyat” (lihat Kenyataan Ketua Pakatan Rakyat 28 Mac 2012) sebenarnya adalah kenyataan yang sangat anti aqidah, menghina Islam serta pengkhianatan kepada usaha-usaha menyemarakkan kegiatan wacana Islam menerusi kegiatan ilmiah. MUAFAKAT ingin menegaskan sikap bahawa istiqamah dalam hal-hal berkaitan kepentingan Islam. MUAFAKAT tidak ada kompromi dengan kenyataan anti ilmu sebegini kerana sengaja diadakan untuk mendapat publisiti murahan musuh Islam dan memprovokasi keutuhan perjuangan menegakkan aqidah Islam.

Adalah jelas bahawa kehadiran peserta dalam seminar tersebut adalah dikhususkan untuk guru-guru agama Islam di sekolah-sekolah Menengah dan Rendah di dalam Daerah Johor Bahru. Berdasarkan maklumat umum yang diketahui, penyertaan di dalam seminar sebegini adalah atas jemputan khusus sahaja dan memfokus pada isu yang berada dalam ruang lingkup yang mencakupi urusan intra-agama umat Islam, khususnya dalam memberikan pendedahan serta penaakulan tentang cabaran-cabaran terhadap usaha mempertahankan aqidah umat Islam. 

MUAFAKAT menegaskan bahawa tren untuk mempersoalkan usaha-usaha memantapkan akidah umat Islam akhir-akhir ini merupakan suatu penzahiran sikap kebebalan dan kejahilan terhadap ruanglingkup keistimewaan kedudukan Islam di dalam Perlembagaan Persekutuan. MUAFAKAT dan pelbagai pihak, terutama daripada kalangan institusi Islam, tokoh-tokoh sejarawan, para ulama serta petrtubuhan-pertubuhan Islam Bukan Kerajaan telah acapkali menerangkan tentang maksud dan serta implikasi kedudukan istimewa Islam sebagai Agama Negara. Usaha-usaha seperti penganjuran seminar ini adalah hak yang dijamin di dalam Artikel 11 (4) Perlembagaan Persekutuan. Kuasa yang diberikan oleh Artikel 11(4) itu juga adalah antara peruntukan-peruntukan dalam Perlembagaan yang sebenarnya meletakkan Islam pada tempat yang sewajarnya, sesuai dengan kedudukannya sebagai agama negara. Ini kedudukan yang juga tidak boleh dipersoalkan mana-mana pihak.

MUAFAKAT berpandangan sekiranya maksud Artikel 11(4) itu dilihat bertujuan untuk melindungi keharmonian masyarakat berbilang kaum yang identitinya bertunjang daripada agama, apakah hasrat dan matlamatnya dapat tercapai sekiranya ia tidak dikuatkuasakan serta hak-hak di bawahnya tidak dapat dinikmati umat Islam dan masyarakat Malaysia secara umum? Adalah malang jika peruntukan undang-undang yang sedia ada tidak dimanfaatkan dan digunakan sedangkan terdapat keperluan untuk demikian. Justeru, penganjuran seminar sebegini berada di dalam ruanglingkup yang dibenarkan dan tidak seharusnya dimomokkan sebagai usaha untuk mewujudkan ketidakstabilan dan ketidakharmonian di kalangan masyarakat awam. Sebaliknya, dengan berlakunya usaha-usaha pemantapan aqidah di kalangan guru dan pelajar Islam, maka usaha untuk memperbaiki amalan beragama yang membawa pada kebaikan umum di kalangan seluruh masyarakat berbialng agama dan kaum di Malaysia akan dapat dilakukan dengan lebih berkesan. Hal ini bertepatan dengan fungsi melindungi keharmonian beragama, sesuai dengan peruntukan dan semangat Artikel 11(4) Perlembagaan Persekutuan.

MUAFAKAT juga menegaskan bahawa tidak wujud keperluan campurtangan oleh Jawatankuasa Antara Agama berhubung bantahan terhadap penganjuran seminar ini, memandangkan isu-isu intra-agama; urusan-urusan di dalam hal ehwal Islam perlu diselesaikan oleh mereka yang berkeahlian di kalangan umat Islam serta menurut lunas-lunas agama serta peruntukan undang-undang yang berkaitan.

MUAFAKAT menyeru semua NGO dan aktivis dakwah Islam bersama dengan Jabatan Pelajaran Johor dan Jabatan Mufti Johor meneruskan usaha mempertahankan aqidah umat Islam menerusi penganjuran wacana keilmuan ini.

Sarkozy to bar radical imams from entering France

PARIS (Reuters) – France will bar radical Muslim preachers from entering the country to participate in an Islamic conference next month as part of a crackdown after shootings by an al Qaeda-inspired gunman, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Monday.

Sarkozy, who has announced plans to punish those viewing Islamist Web sites and going abroad for indoctrination, said he would block the entry of some imams invited to a congress organized by theUnion of French Islamic Organizations (UOIF).

The UOIF, one of three Muslim federations in France, is regarded as close to Egypt’s Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.

“I have clearly indicated that there certain people who have been invited to this congress who are not welcome on French soil,” Sarkozy told France Info radio.

He cited Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi, an Egyptian cleric based in Qatar who is one of the most prominent Sunni Muslim clerics in the Arab world and a household name in the Middle East due to regular appearances on the Al Jazeera news channel.

A former member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, Qaradawi is independent of the group but remains close to it. Sarkozy said the situation was complicated because the imam holds a diplomatic passport and does not require a visa to enter France.

“I indicated to the Emir of Qatar himself that this person was not welcome on the territory of the French republic,” Sarkozy said. “He will not come.”

Qaradawi was denied a visa to visit Britain in 2008 on grounds of seeking to “justify acts of terrorist violence or disburse views that could foster inter-community violence”, a Home Office spokeswoman said at the time. The cleric had defended Palestinian suicide bombers in Israel and attacks on U.S.-led coalition forces in Iraq.

Sarkozy, campaigning for re-election, rebutted criticism by opposition politicians that the security services blundered in allowing 23-year-old Mohamed Merah, a petty criminal known to have visited Afghanistan twice, to shoot dead seven people in a 10-day rampage in southwest France.

“Here is a young criminal who suddenly becomes a very active terrorist without any transition. As far as we know there was no cell,” Sarkozy said.

Boy gets 20 stitches after 3 dogs attack him

SUNGAI PETANI: A boy received 20 stitches on his left calf after he was attacked by three hungry dogs while playing football at a public field in Sungai Lalang here on Friday.

Muhammad Nabil Amin Abdul Wahab, 10, was keeping goal during the game at Taman Bandar Baru’s public field when he was attacked from behind by the three dogs in the 6pm incident.

He said his friends ran helter skelter upon seeing the dogs but he could not run because his right foot was hurt.

“At that time, I saw a dog open its mouth wide and seize my left leg. I screamed for help but no one came. A dog was on top of me while two others were near my head,” he told reporters when met at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) here, Saturday.

He said, nevertheless, he was lucky because he was saved by a customer having tea at a nearby restaurant who saw his hands flailing about in distress.

Muhammad Nabil was sent to HSAH for treatment and was discharged Saturday. He was given one-week medical leave.

Meanwhile, his mother Nor Azila Osman, 29, said Muhammad Nabil had not fully recovered from an injury on his right foot after stepping on a piece of glass while playing on the same field, and had not gone to the field for a week.

Nor Azila said such incidents often took place in the housing area, including last month when a primary school girl was bitten by a dog on the way home from school. – Bernama

MUAFAKAT mengucapkan takziah kepada keluarga ahli kami, Sdr. Haji Awwaluddin b Juffery yang meninggal dunia pada 17hb Mac 2012 di Kulim Kedah.

Arwah yang menyertai Kayuhan Gaza di Kulim tiba di tempat tamat kayuhan pada jam 10 pagi tiba-tiba muntah dan jatuh selepas turun dari van yang dinaiki.

Sahabat-sahabt yang bersama beliau membawa masuk ke dalam surau berdekatan surau dan menghembuskan nafas akhirnya di situ.

Jenazah kemudian dibawa ke Hospital Kulim untuk pengesahan kematian dan dimandikan dan solat sebelum dibawa pulang ke Kempas, Johor pada jam 5:30 petang.

Jenazah selamat tiba di Johor jam 1.30 pagi dan dikebumikan keesokkannya jam 2.00 petang.

Allahyarham Awwaluddin adalah salah seorang aktivis yang cergas dengan pelbagai persatuan. Arwah adalah di antara ahli yang sentiasa hadir untuk Mesyuarat Agung Tahunan (MAT) MUAFAKAT walaupun terpaksa datang dari Johor dengan menaiki pengangkutan awam.

Arwah yang juga dilantik sebagai Pemeriksa Kira-kira MUAFAKAT kali terakhir bersama kami dalam MAT ke 7, dua minggu lalu, sentiasa banyak mengutarakan pelbagai cadangan dan buah fikiran.

Semoga Allah mencucuri rahmat ke atas roh arwah. Ameen.

Tilawah Bible Dalam Bahasa Arab?

Sememangnya patut Kementerian Dalam Negeri mengharamkan penggunaan beberapa kalimah termasuk Kalimah Allah oleh mana-mana pihak bukan Islam.

Sekali dengar macam tilawah Quran cuma ayat-ayat itu bukannya dari Al-Quran. Siap dengan “sadaqallahu azim” lagi.
