A Malay rights activist has insisted that Muslims have exclusive right to use the word “Allah”, saying that this was proven by the previous head of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict, who used “Rabb” when he spoke to an Arab-speaking crowd.

According to Pertubuhan Muafakat Sejahtera Masyarakat Malaysia secretary-general A. Karim Omar, when the former Pope addressed a crowd in St Peter’s Square in October 2012, he said: “May Rabb bless you.”

Pope Benedict-Rabb not AllahThe Pope’s blessings to the Arab-speaking Christians came following his visits to Syria and Lebanon, Karim said.

However, international media quoted him as saying “May Allah bless you”, which drew criticism.

“The Vatican then issued a statement the next day, correcting that the Pope had said ‘Rabb’ and not ‘Allah’.

“So why are the Christians here so insistent on using the word?” Omar said outside the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya where the Federal Court is hearing the Catholic Church’s leave application on the “Allah” case today.

Meanwhile, Tindakan Suruhanjaya Sukarelawan Al-Falah Malaysia representative Datuk Hajjah Hasnah Salam decried the move to deny Muslims exclusive use of the word.

“If the church succeeds today, the international Muslim community should step in and take action,” she said.

Meanwhile, a 1,000–strong crowd has gathered on the steps of the Palace of Justice, awaiting the outcome as they chant “Allahuakhbar”. – March 5, 2014.
